🎓Why Choose Us?
Do you love marine mammals and love research? Here is your chance to participate in a citizen science project using a non-invasive tool, the FLIR Camera. This workshop will be led by Scripps Instution of Oceanography scientist and PhD student, Sonya Timko who specializes in thermal ecology, @dr_salty8. With Sonya's expertise, you will get up-close and personal, while keeping a respectful distance, to one of the most incredible native marine mammals in San Diego, the California Sea Lion!
Pinnipeds like the California Sea Lion live in two drastically different environments, land and ocean; therefore, need to continuously regulate their intertidal body temperature. While blubber keeps pinnipeds warm in cold water temperatures, it also makes it difficult to lose heat.
In small teams, you will investigate if there thermal windows or areas on a sea lion's body that helps dissipate heat. You will learn how to use thermal cameras and analyze various thermal images using FlirTools and ImageJ. Each student will also be able to take home their own thermal image.
How will climate change impact these organisms that need to beat the heat? Let's find out together!
